Deal registration conflict checking is the process of verifying that a deal a partner wants to register isn't already claimed, by another partner or by your own direct sales team, before the registration gets confirmed.
Why deal registration exists in the first place
Partners register deals for one reason: protection. If a partner brings you a real opportunity, they want to know they'll get credit for it and that a direct rep or a competing partner won't quietly work the same account and take it out from under them. Take that protection away, even once, and partners stop bringing you their best opportunities. They'll work with whoever they trust to honor the registration.
What "conflict" actually means here
A conflict isn't just "someone else mentioned this company once." It's specific: the account already has an open opportunity, it's already registered by a different partner, a direct rep is actively working it or it falls inside another partner's exclusive territory. Vague overlap isn't a conflict. A competing claim on the same active deal is.

How conflict checking should work
It has to run in real time, at the moment of registration, not on a nightly batch job that tells someone about a conflict two days after they've already started working the deal. It needs a clear resolution rule decided in advance, first-registered wins, or a documented override process, rather than a judgment call made fresh every time.
And it has to be careful about what it reveals i.e. a rejected partner should learn that the deal isn't available, not the specifics of who else is working it.
Two partners are often technically competing for the same accounts and handing one of them a clear view into the other's pipeline is its own kind of problem.
What happens when a conflict is found
Depending on how the program is set up, this usually goes one of three ways i.e. the registration is flagged for a human to review, it's rejected automatically in favor of whoever registered first or an exclusivity rule kicks in and routes it to the partner who owns that territory. Whichever path it takes, both sides should get a clear, unambiguous answer not a support ticket that sits for a week while a partner assumes the worst.
Conflict checking is what makes deal registration mean something. A registration form with no check behind it is just a suggestion box. A registration form backed by a real-time conflict check is a promise your partners can actually rely on, which is the only reason they register deals with you instead of just working around you.
