Simples Way
MCP, Model Context Protocol is a standard that lets an AI assistant like Claude connect to a piece of software and actually use it, not just read about it. Think of it as a menu of specific actions an AI can take inside a tool instead of a wall of data it can only summarize.
Why this matters if you're not an engineer
You don't need to understand the protocol to care about the outcome. The outcome is that your partnerships tool can live inside the chat window or Slack channel you already have open all day, instead of being one more tab you have to remember exists.
03. How it's different from a regular integration
A normal integration moves data between two systems, usually on a schedule or a webhook. It's plumbing. An MCP server exposes actual actions an AI can call on demand i.e. register this deal, draft this partner update, check this partner's health score in the middle of a live conversation decided in the moment rather than pre-scheduled.

"An integration moves data between two systems. An MCP server lets an AI agent actually do the work inside them."
What an MCP server actually lets an AI agent do
A few concrete examples is An agent can search for partners matching a given ICP and return a ranked list, register a deal and get a conflict check back in the same breath, draft a partner update pulled from real deal context instead of a template or pull a partner's current health score without anyone opening a dashboard. Each of those is a defined action with real inputs and real outputs, not a vague "ask me anything."
What this means for running a partner program?
The portal stops being the only way in. A partner manager can ask a question or take an action from wherever they already are, and get a real answer back, not a link to go log in somewhere else. We go deeper on what that shift actually requires, beyond just piping notifications into Slack, in Why "Headless Partnerships" Isn't Just About Slack and CRM Sync.
The takeaway
An MCP server is what turns an AI assistant from something that can describe your partner program into something that can actually operate parts of it, with real actions, real data and a human still confirming anything that matters. That distinction i.e. describing versus doing is the whole story.
